Are You Living Your Best Life?

Writer: J.P. RoseJ.P. Rose

Life is a fleeting, singular experience—a journey meant to be fulfilling and joyous. Yet, many of us find ourselves asking: Am I truly living my best life? If your answer is uncertain, perhaps it’s time to reprogram the way you think, perceive, and engage with the world around you.

Reflecting on Your Journey

From the moment you were born to this very second, can you honestly say you’ve enjoyed the ride? Some of us might confidently assert, “I’m doing well—better than most.” You’ve achieved societal success: a thriving career, financial stability, healthy relationships. You’ve checked all the boxes. On the surface, this is admirable; you’ve navigated life’s external metrics of success with aplomb. Yet, even among those who’ve "made it," a gnawing void often persists.

For others, the journey has been fraught with hardship. Circumstances outside their control—family, geography, socioeconomic status—shaped their path in ways that seemed impossible to overcome. And still, some who’ve climbed the highest mountains feel inexplicably unfulfilled.

Why is this? Why do we strive for the pinnacle of success, only to find ourselves longing for more?

The Illusion of Fulfillment

Social media paints a tantalizing picture of the "ideal" life. Influencers flaunt their extravagant homes, luxury cars, and jet-setting adventures, their curated lives enticing envy and aspiration. Meanwhile, societal leaders toil away at political agendas, striving for legacy while neglecting their own humanity.

This relentless chase—whether for fame, wealth, power, or influence—is an illusion. History reminds us that every great civilization eventually crumbles, leaving behind only fragments for the next to ponder. The houses, accolades, and Instagram followers? They will not outlast you. So, if these pursuits are not the key to happiness, what is?

The human dilemma is this: we climb, we conquer, we succeed, yet the summit always feels incomplete. Once we achieve what we thought would fulfill us, the goalpost moves. It’s human nature to seek the next level—it’s how we’ve evolved. But what if true contentment doesn’t lie in the next achievement, but in a fundamental shift in perspective?

The Two Dimensions of Life

To live your best life, you must understand the two ways we experience life: externally and internally. Most people only operate in the external realm, relying on their five senses and intellect to navigate the world. This external experience includes the routines and activities we associate with living: working, socializing, consuming media, and indulging in pleasures. These pursuits are valid, even enjoyable, but they are not enough.

The internal experience, often overlooked, is where true fulfillment resides. This is the realm of self-awareness, where you connect with your essence—the part of you untouched by societal conditioning, free from the labels, roles, and expectations imposed by the world. When the internal and external experiences align, life transforms from a grind to a grand adventure.

The Identity Crisis: Who’s Behind the Wheel?

Most of us identify with our external selves—our names, careers, achievements, and relationships. But these are merely tools for navigating the world. Imagine your body as a vehicle: the mind is the engine, emotions are the dashboard indicators, and your senses are the GPS. Essential as they are, these components do not define you. The question is:Who’s driving the vehicle?

When you live solely through your external identity, life often feels chaotic, reactive, and unfulfilling. The key to transformation is realizing that you—the driver—are distinct from the vehicle. When you tap into your inner being, you gain control over the ride. Life becomes intentional, empowering, and deeply satisfying.

Redefining Fulfillment: It’s an Inside Job

Many people seek external validation to fill internal voids. They enter relationships, chase promotions, or collect possessions, hoping these will bring happiness. But until you cultivate inner peace and self-love, these pursuits will only provide fleeting satisfaction. True contentment arises when you are fulfilled independently of external circumstances.

This doesn’t mean abandoning ambition or pleasure. Instead, it’s about shifting your focus. When you stop trying to fill a void and start living from a place of wholeness, every experience becomes richer. You choose relationships, careers, and hobbies not out of need, but out of joy.

Steps to Align with Your Best Life

  1. Acknowledge Your Dual NatureUnderstand that you are more than your external identity. Take time to explore your inner self—the part of you that exists beyond the mind and emotions.

  2. Reprogram Your MindsetChallenge societal conditioning. Much of what you believe has been taught to you; question whether these beliefs serve your true happiness.

  3. Practice Self-Care Without GuiltSelfishness, in its healthy form, is essential. Just as flight attendants advise putting on your oxygen mask first, you must prioritize your well-being to effectively support others.

  4. Develop Inner AwarenessMeditation, mindfulness, and introspection can help you connect with your essence. These practices teach you to observe your thoughts and emotions without being controlled by them.

  5. Choose Joy Over ObligationEngage in activities and relationships that align with your inner being. Let go of people-pleasing and societal expectations.

A Message to the Driver: You Are the God of Your Experience

You are the architect of your human experience. This isn’t about arrogance but empowerment. By embracing your unique essence, you honor the 1 in 13 billion odds that made you human.

Life is not about surviving the rat race or meeting the world’s expectations. It’s about thriving in alignment with your true self. When you shift your perception and tap into your internal being, life stops feeling like a chore and starts feeling like a gift.

So, ask yourself again: Am I living my best life? If the answer is no, the good news is that transformation is always possible. Your best life isn’t a destination; it’s a state of being. Start the journey today, and see where it takes you.
